How it works & common questions
Packing slip vs. Pick list: the difference
While both documents list the items in an order, they serve two different people at different times:
A pick list (internal warehouse copy): Used by fulfillment staff to gather items from shelves or warehouse bins. It includes bin/shelf locations and a checklist box to ensure nothing is missed before packing.
A packing slip (customer shipment copy): Placed inside the shipping carton for the customer. It confirms what is inside the box, order reference details, and instructions for reporting any damage or shortages. Prices are usually omitted so it can also serve gift or drop-ship orders.
A worked example
Suppose you fulfill a wholesale order for a specialty bakery:
SKU BRD-01: 15 units from Bin A-12 (Artisan Sourdough Round)
SKU BAG-04: 20 units from Bin B-03 (Whole Wheat Bagels 6pk)
SKU CRO-02: 10 units from Bin C-07 (Butter Croissants 4pk)
Total shipment: 3 unique SKUs totaling 45 units.
Common mistakes
The most frequent warehouse picking error is picking without a checklist, resulting in wrong sizes or quantities. On customer packing slips, always include clear instructions on how to report damaged or missing items. If drop-shipping on behalf of another merchant, never include item prices or wholesale invoice amounts on the customer packing slip.
