How it works & common questions

How to calculate net hours and overtime

Tracking payroll hours requires converting clock times into decimal hours while properly subtracting unpaid meal breaks:

A worked example

Suppose an employee works five shifts during a weekly pay period at a base rate of $20.00/hr:

Common mistakes

Do not confuse clock minutes with decimal hours: 7 hours and 15 minutes is 7.25 hours, not 7.15 hours. Enter only unpaid breaks that apply to your workplace. This tool does not determine break or overtime eligibility.

How to use the Timecard calculator

  1. Enter the employee name, hourly rate, and weekly overtime threshold (sample: 40 hours).
  2. Add each shift with clock-in time, clock-out time, and unpaid break minutes.
  3. Review total hours, overtime split, and gross pay. Print a timesheet or copy the summary.

Calculates gross clock hours and overtime based on your entered weekly threshold. Does not deduct state, federal, or FICA payroll taxes. Does not calculate daily overtime, multiple pay rates, or overtime eligibility. Changing the weekly threshold does not implement daily overtime.
