How it works & common questions
How the split works
Tip pooling combines collected gratuities and redistributes them among eligible staff according to a consistent, documented formula:
- Hours-only split: Every worker receives the same tip rate per hour worked (
Tip Pool / Total Staff Hours). A team member who works an 8-hour shift receives twice the tip payout of someone working 4 hours. - Point-weighted split: Different roles receive different point multipliers reflecting experience, preparation, or customer interaction. For example: Lead Server = 10 points, Bartender = 10 points, Busser = 6 points, Food Runner = 5 points. An employee's share is calculated from their
Hours × Pointsweight. - Who to include: This tool only divides the amount entered. It does not determine who is eligible for your pool; confirm eligibility before adding staff.
A worked example
Suppose a Saturday dinner shift collects a $650.00 tip pool among four employees using role points:
- Alex (Server): 8.0 hours × 10 points = 80 weight units.
- Jordan (Server): 8.0 hours × 10 points = 80 weight units.
- Taylor (Bartender): 8.5 hours × 10 points = 85 weight units.
- Morgan (Busser): 8.0 hours × 10 points = 80 weight units. In this sample, weights total 325 units.
- Dollar value per unit:
$650.00 / 325 = $2.00 per point-unit. - Payouts: Alex gets 80 × $2 = $160.00 ($20.00/hr). Jordan gets 80 × $2 = $160.00 ($20.00/hr). Taylor gets 85 × $2 = $170.00 ($20.00/hr). Morgan gets 80 × $2 = $160.00 ($20.00/hr). Total distributed is exactly $650.00 with zero leftover pennies.
Common mistakes
Confirm your pool membership and formula before distributing tips. Avoid manual percentage rounding, which leads to rounding errors and missing or extra pennies at the end of the shift. Always document the tip pooling agreement in writing and post the formula so staff understand how their shift payout is calculated.
