How it works & common questions

What do you keep from a sale?

Use this before setting a price or offering a discount. Unit profit is the selling price minus the cost of that item. It is what remains to cover overhead, taxes and your take-home pay.

A $100 sale with a $60 cost

You keep $40 before overhead and taxes. That is a 40% margin because $40 is 40% of your $100 price. The markup is 66.67% because $40 is two-thirds of your $60 cost.

Common mistakes

Margin and markup use different starting amounts. A 40% markup is not a 40% margin. Include packaging and payment fees in your cost if you want them reflected here. Leave sales tax out of your selling price. If the cost is zero, markup cannot be calculated. A negative profit means you lose money on each sale.

How to use Unit profit

  1. Enter what one item costs you.
  2. Enter what you sell it for, before sales tax.
  3. Read the live result and copy it. Use More to print or download.

This does not calculate tax, monthly overhead or total business profit. Use the same currency for both amounts; the dollar sign is only a label. Your amounts are not saved when you leave.
