How to use it

  1. Enter your cost.
  2. Enter your selling price to see margin and markup.
  3. Or enter the margin you want to get the price you need to charge.

The math

Margin = (price minus cost) divided by price
Markup = (price minus cost) divided by cost
Price for a target margin = cost divided by (1 minus margin)

Good to know

  • Margin and markup are not the same number. A 50% markup is only about a 33% margin.

Questions

Should I price by margin or markup?

Either works if you are consistent. Margin tells you what share of each sale is profit, which is easier to compare to your expenses.
